“Political relations are at a very good level”

Interview with Her Excellency, Mrs Silvia Davidoiu,

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Austria

Economic relations between Romania and Austria are excellent, indeed. How can you explain this? Are there any chances for them to become closer?

There could be many explanations, based on the geographical proximity, on our membership in the European common market, from the facilities offered to foreign investors by our legislation, to the size and absorptive capacity of the Romanian market and to more sophisticated arguments related to our geo-strategic po- sition on the Danube, Black Sea and therefore the potential to reach other markets throughout our region. Regarding the possi- bility to improve these economic relations, I am firmly convinced that there is potential for development in the future. I think we can learn a lot from our partners in Austria on absorption of EU funds and to also take in advanced environmental technologies – where Austrian companies have a world-class expertise. I want to emphasize on the ascending trend of the political relationships between our countries, on the deeper dialogue between regions and cities in Romania and Austria, resulting in not only signing memoranda of cooperation or partnerships, but actual launching of projects in municipal management, waste management etc.

Is there a close relationship of the Embassy with the Romanian Diaspora?

There is an ongoing work frame between the Embassy and all or- ganizations and associations of the Romanian community in Austria. We support them at the extent of our capabilities – less financially, as we do not have that possibility – we participate in all the events they organize, provide information and consular as- sistance, engage them in projects initiated by us. It is a complex relationship, because the Romanian Diaspora is not very united, is a heterogeneous community that has been formed over many decades as a result of several waves of migration and, conse- quently, their specific problems, their concerns are very different.
