„Asta este o poveste veche. Pe care unii încă o mai cred. Se spune că tabloul (e vorba despre Naşterea Mântuitorului, n.a.) a fost distrus sau pierdut în timpul unui cutremur lângă Napoli. A mai fost văzut de cel puţin două ori de atunci. Şi există nenumărate mărturii referitoare la existenţa lui şi la rolurile pe care le-a jucat de-a lungul timpului. Se spune că a ajuns chiar la Johannesburg ca garanţie pentru un transport de diamante“. Gaj sau nu, oricum, povestea e fascinantă. Iar eu, unul, sunt mare amator de poveşti. Căci din poveşti se încropesc cărţile. Numai chestiile astea îmi umblau prin cap atunci când, de la Piaţa Romană, am apucat-o pe strada din spatele cinematografului Patria, să-mi cumpăr bilet pentru Malta. Unde începe aventura.
Portul Caravaggio
Caravaggio este unul dintre cei mai mari pictori ai lumii. Ai tuturor timpurilor. Cel puţin după gustul meu. Şi cheia înţelegerii operei sale este chiar Malta. Nu poţi înţelege Caravaggio fără viaţa lui. Iar viaţa lui trece inevitabil prin Malta. Am ajuns în Malta anul trecut, vara trecută, fără să ştiu că va fi o destinaţie de-a dreptul incredibilă. Era mai puţin cald decât mă aşteptam, dar de prăjit puteai să te prăjeşti la soare, dacă numai pentru asta veniseşi. Plajele sunt şi de nisip, şi de piatră, dar de o umbreluţă ai musai nevoie: aşa, ca să te simţi şic. Spuneam că Malta este o destinaţie incredibilă deoarece pe un spaţiu atât de mic se întâmplă atât de multe lucruri. Malta e pur şi simplu încărcată de istorie ca un revolver ghiftuit, până la refuz, cu gloanţe. Am întâlnit acolo, de altfel, şi una dintre cele mai extraordinare colecţii de imagini de care am avut parte. (Vă spun eu, aveţi nevoie de trei aparate de fotografiat, nu unul. Pe cele de filmat nu le mai pun la socoteală.) Totuşi, recunosc, cele mai fascinante sunt, de departe, pozele din porturi. De altfel, una dintre croaziere (Harbour Cruise) este oferită, ca un dar, de către însuşi patronul agenţiei cu care am călătorit acolo, Mark Faruggia Neville. Ca să nu credeţi că e reclamă gratuită pentru Malta, am să vă spun, doar, că găsiţi orice amănunt de travel story pe site-ul MALTA TRAVEL (www.malta.ro), singurul tur-operator care „face” direct, împreună cu linia aeriană aferentă, Air Malta, această destinaţie din România. În rest, îmi pare rău pentru dumneavoastră, dar nu am să îmi bat prea mult capul cu chestia asta. Site-ul spune tot ce trebuie să ştii despre Malta: detalii de călătorie, reţete, costuri (eu pot să spun doar că sunt speze convenabile, în jur de două sau trei-patru sute de euro, deci ceva să nu-ţi sece punga). Detest să pun acolo, pigulite, multe date pe care, oricum, le veţi găsi în ghidurile de călătorie. Pe mine mă interesează doar povestea lui Caravaggio, împletită, fireşte, aşa cum se şi cuvine, cu a Maltei. Pentru că el, Marele Pictor, Caravaggio, a fost în Malta. A stat câţiva ani acolo. A fost întemniţat. L-a jignit pe Marele Maestru (dar despre Marii Maeştri, ei bine, asta urmează să „curgă” într-un alt serial, aveţi doar puţintică răbdare, maybe next issue, who knows?). A fost, până la urmă, eliberat, mai de milă, mai de silă, cu condiţia să părăsească Malta. Ceea ce a şi făcut. A murit, apoi, în Italia. Foarte tânăr. Dar despre toate acestea, pe rând. Deşi şi eu aş vrea să povestesc pe nerăsuflate, pentru că e un subiect care mă fascinează. V-am deschis deja curiozitatea?
Oglinda lui Narcis
Un băiat, poate foarte tânăr. Cu trăsături efeminate. De care s-ar îndrăgosti şi un homosexual. Sau, poate, un metrosexual. Băiatul (bărbătuşul?) este frumos, fără îndoială. Şi este roşcat. Este pieptănat cu o cărare pe o parte. Mai precis, pe stânga. Are părul lung. Faţa contemplativă. Este îndrăgostit de sine până la refuz. Se uită într-o oglindă care, de fapt, este râul. Sau lacul. Apa toată seamănă cu o podea cu luciul de oglindă. El este îmbrăcat cu o cămaşă albă, cu mâneci bufante, peste care poartă o jiletcă în culori de un verde stins, cu model: un soi de flori. Are mâinile sprijinite pe mal. Este, de altfel, şi pe coperta unei recent apărute cărţi de la Nemira. (Cartea se numeşte chiar Obsesia Caravaggio.) Iar tabloul – nu cred că era greu să ghiciţi – este semnat Caravaggio. Vorbim, de fapt, de un detaliu din opera numită Narcis: acesta e numele pânzei. Se vede, în unde, reflectarea mâinilor. Şi genunchiul, care e dezgolit. Cut. O altă poveste. Un tablou este subtilizat. Pur şi simplu amputat din fereastra magică a ramei care îl poartă. Ciopârţit, scrâş-scrâş, cu cuţitul. Căsăpit. Cu brişca. Furăciunea se operează din altarul unei capele din oraşul sicilian Palermo. Fief al mafiei, desigur. Anul este 1969. Iată ce spune cartea: „Dar Caravaggio – asta este cu totul altceva. Celebrul tablou furat. Tăiat din ramă şi sustras din locul său – altarul unei capele din Palermo – în 1969, a fost folosit, în ultimii treizeci de ani, de clanurile implicate în crima organizată ca asigurare valorând câteva milioane de dolari – o garanţie pentru orice, de la afaceri cu droguri până la asasinate politice. Sau, cel puţin, aşa spune legenda. La fel ca majoritatea poliţiştilor din lumea artelor frumoase, am fost convins că tabloul este distrus. Dar, ca orice admirator al artei lui Caravaggio, am sperat ca acest lucru să nu fie adevărat”.

Am intrat în Palatul Marilor Maeştri din La Valletta cu gândul că voi vedea unul dintre tablourile imense, impozante ale lui Caravagio. Ea, pânza, se odihneşte, într-adevăr, pe un perete – şi este copleşitoare. De altfel, atât Palatul cât şi pânza însăşi sunt printre cele mai copleşitoare lucruri pe care le-am văzut vreodată. De altfel, Malta are aspectul unui muzeu medieval în aer liberal, printre puţinele, din Europa, beneficiind de fortificaţii militare foarte solide. Şi totuşi, de departe, zidurile au culoarea mierii. Impozantă este şi intrarea în oraş: am intrat trecând direct pe sub arcadele unei porţi monumentale.
Eurovision, Caravaggio & Malta
Malta are un steag care poate părea ciudat, dar e întemeiat istoric: în două culori, roşu şi alb, cu cinci turnuri melifere (creneluri) deasupra scutului (schield) împresurat de „laurii” locali. După ce s-au apărat, cu succes, de asedii asidue, îndârjite, timp de secole, maltezii n-au uitat. De pe steme nu lipseşte, bineînţeles, crucea, încondeiată cu roşu. El s-a „exilat” în Roma, pe strada Condotti. Acolo a întemeiat cel mai mic stat din lume. Un stat liliputan care se numeşte chiar STĂREŢIA DIN MALTA.
Ca să încep cu o anecdotă, ar trebui să spun că, anul acesta, Malta s-a prezentat la concursul EUROVISION cu… Caravaggio. Aşa se numea bucata. E drept că şi Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio era un tip dintr-o bucată. Se aţinea repede la scandaluri, fire violentă, motiv pentru care a şi trebuit să părăsească Roma (din cauza unei crime) pentru Neapole şi, apoi, insulele malteze. O dată sosit în Malta, solicită ospitalitate Cavalerilor Sf. Ioan, pictând portrete succesive ale Marelui Maestru al Ordinului. Care, la acea vreme, era Alf de Wignacourt. Malta echivalează cu o perioadă artistică plină de rod pentru Caravaggio. El este înălţat, în 1608, la titlul de Cavaler de Malta. Meteahna sa violentă îl mână la o cafteală cu un nobil. Nu mai apucă să vadă Roma pentru că moare, de boală, la doar treizeci şi nouă de ani.
