Euthanasia

Am considerat deopotrivă necesară şi utilă, pentru completarea subiectului nostru, o mini-anchetă în rândul câtorva medici din Bucureşti, cărora le-am solicitat să ne răspundă la două întrebări:

1. Credeţi sau aţi auzit vreodată că în anumite spitale din România se practică euthanasia – sub o formă mai mult sau – mai puţin mascată?

2. Aţi avut, de-a lungul carierei dv. de medic, pacienţi care v-au cerut să-i euthanasiaţi? Dacă da, care a fost reacţia dv. faţă de respectiva solicitare?

Dr. Vasile Lazăr, medic primar medicină generală, medic de familie:

„ 1- Nu ştiu şi nici nu cred că în spitalele din ţara noastră se practică euthanasia, fiindcă orice medic luptă pentru viaţa bolnavilor, nu pentru a-i trimite mai repede în nefiinţă.

2. Am avut tot felul de pacienţi de-a lungul celor aproape 40 de ani de când practic profesia de medic. Unii dintre ei nu mi-au cerut în mod explicit să le curm suferinţele prin euthanasie, dar, până la urmă, prin felul în care au acţionat, au ajuns la rezultatul dorit de dânşii. S-au euthanasiat singuri – desigur, nu acesta e cel mai potrivit termen – prin refuzul sistematic de a consuma mâncare şi apă, fapt ce le-a grăbit, practic, sfârşitul. Au fost, desigur, şi pacienţi care, chiar dacă nu sufereau de boli terminale, erau căzuţi definitiv la pat şi pentru că erau conştienţi că, în ceea ce-i priveşte, nu mai există nici o şansă de recuperare, m-au rugat să-i ajut să-şi sfârşească mai repede chinul. I-am refuzat însă categoric fiindcă eu, conform principiilor personale şi preceptelor profesionale, nu am fost şi nu voi fi niciodată de acord cu asemenea practici.”

Dr. Serghei Cheibas, medic specialist ATI (Anestezie terapie intensivă):

„1. Nu am auzit niciodată ca în vreun spital din România să se practice – sub o formă sau alta – euthanasia. Practic, nici nu se poate întâmpla aşa ceva, fiindcă legislaţia românească nu prevede şi nu permite acest lucru. Dimpotrivă, chiar şi pacienţii care suferă de anumite boli terminale sunt îngrijiţi şi se încearcă, până în ultima lor clipă, tot ceea ce este omeneşte posibil pentru a li se prelungi viaţa.

2. In cei zece ani de când practic medicina nu mi-a cerut nimeni aşa ceva, dar am întâlnit situaţii în care unii suferinzi de boli cronice aveau perioade de cădere, de disperare, în care îşi doreau cu ardoare să termine odată cu chinurile. Era însă vorba de o furie de moment fiindcă, după ce primeau tratamentul adecvat şi starea lor se îmbunătăţea, reveneau la sentimente mai bune faţă de propria lor viaţă. Pe de altă parte, am întâlnit pacienţi cu o dorinţă de viaţă foarte mare, deşi erau în etate şi paralizaţi, astfel că depindeau în totalitate de cei din jurul lor.”

Dr. Adriana Bucată, medic specialist medicină de familie:

„1. Sunt tânăr medic specialist şi în formarea mea am făcut stagii în mai multe spitale bucureştene. Am avut drept colegi şi medici tineri, plini de entuziasm, şi medici mai vârstnici, cu experienţă bogată. Preocupările noastre au fost, întotdeauna, de a prelungi viaţa şi a uşura suferinţa pacienţilor, dar nici unul dintre noi nu cred că a cutezat să se gândească la uşurarea suferinţei prin curmarea vieţii bolnavului. Am văzut copii/nou-născuţi cu tare neurologice grave şi definitive, unii dintre ei abandonaţi de părinţi; ne-am gândit la viitorul lor nefericit, dar am continuat să ne facem datoria de medici, să le tratăm bolile asociate şi să le ameliorăm suferinţele. Am avut ca pacienţi şi bolnavi de cancer în faze terminale, care au necesitat morfină şi ale căror rude s-au întrebat ulterior dacă nu cumva chiar morfina a fost aceea care le-a scurtat viaţa. Am auzit însă şi de un medic neurochirurg care, după un AVC (accident vascular cerebral) sechelar, cu hemipareză şi afazie, şi-a curmat singur suferinţa. Cred, deci, că în România nu se practică (încă) euthanasia, dar că sunt pacienţi care îşi pun singuri capăt zilelor.

2. Nu, n-am avut şi, personal, voi refuza acest act pentru că, atâta timp cât numai Dumnezeu este Acela care poate da viaţă, îl las tot pe El să decidă momentul mântuirii vieţii şi, implicit, a sufletului. Tot ce pot eu să fac este să am grijă de trupul care găzduieşte sufletul în calea lui spre mântuire; ceea ce-mi este peste putinţă ţine deja de Dumnezeu şi-mi păstrez speranţa că, întotdeauna, mai există o şansă.”

Dr. Silviu Dăscălescu, medic primar ATI:

„1. Poate vi se va părea surprinzător, însă la prima dv. întrebare răspunsul meu este «oarecum da»! Să mă explic: sunt anumiţi pacienţi, în stadiu terminal (în special cei care sunt conştienţi de iminenţa sfârşitului lor foarte apropiat, confirmat şi pe cale medicală), care, mai mult nerostit, ar dori să fie euthanasiaţi. Sigur, nu cer explicit acest lucru, dar atât ei cât şi aparţinătorii lor renunţă la luptă. Adică îşi pierd orice speranţă că boala lor se va mai ameliora vreodată, cad în letargie şi aşteaptă, cu resemnare, sfârşitul. Eu cred că şi asta înseamnă un fel de euthanasie nerostită.

2. Niciodată n-am auzit de la vreun pacient cuvintele «Vreau să mor. Ajuta- ţi-mă!». Unii acceptă mai greu, alţii mai uşor, inevitabilitatea a ceea ce va urma. Sigur că se mai întâmplă ca unii să spună «Lăsaţi-mă să mor!», însă aceasta se întâmplă datorită tulburărilor psihice care se manifestă la foarte mulţi dintre pacienţii de la terapie intensivă. Dar, repet, nici unul nu mi-a spus în mod expres, în deplină cunoştinţă de cauză şi foarte liniştit, ceva de genul «Eu m-am hotărât să mor. Vă rog să mă decuplaţi de la aparate!». Probabil că hotărâri de acest gen le iau îndeosebi bolnavii de cancer aflaţi în faza terminală, pe care însă nu cred că-i veţi afla în secţiile ATI.”
