După formidabilul succes obţinut de The Passion of the Christ, regizorul, scenaristul, producătorul şi fost-actorul Mel Gibson revine cu acest Apocalypto – o primă încercare cinematografică de referinţă închinată uneia dintre cele mai misterioase şi fascinante civilizaţii din întreaga istorie a lumii: Civilizaţia MAYA…

Spectaculos ca realizare şi aproape înspăimântător prin unele imagini de o cruntă violenţă (dar care reproduc întocmai practici reale ale mayaşilor, dovedite istoric, precum sacrificiile umane cumplite cu smulgerea inimii palpitânde din trupul încă viu, decapitările sau actele de caniba-lism), ultimul film al lui Gibson – deşi conţinând unele palide aluzii la pericolele care pândesc actuala civilizaţie! – şi realizat cu înalt profesionalism, conţine o şocantă lipsă de logică a scenariului; şi iată de ce:

În locul genericului – ce va fi plasat la sfârşitul peliculei!? – filmul se deschide cu un citat din W. Durant, aplicat pe întreg ecranul negru: O mare civilizaţie nu este cucerită din afară, PÂNĂ CÂND NU S-A DISTRUS SINGURĂ PE DINĂUNTRU…! (s.n.) Bun… (Să reţinem aşadar acest lucru!)

Superproducţia lui Gibson dovedeşte ambiţia aproape feroce a acestuia de a fi cât mai AUTENTIC: filmările au avut loc în Mexic şi Guatemala, în vârful templului de la El Mirador, în singura pădure tropicală ce a mai rămas în zonă; distribuţia a fost compusă, exclusiv, din populaţia indigenă din cele două Americi, mulţi dintre membrii acesteia vorbind dialecte diferite… au fost angajaţi profesori care au stat în permanenţă pe platou, verificând pronunţia interpreţilor (alături de Mel Gibson, care s-a implicat personal în toate scenele periculoase de acţiune!) …întregul film fiind în cele din urmă VORBIT în limba Yucatec (un dialect maya)…

Şi iată rezultatul: după un scurt „intermezzo“ (vânătoarea unui animal, sălbatică şi întru hrană, de către membrii unui „trib“ – asta ca să ne obişnuim cu scenele dure ce vor urma! – filmul se rupe, practic, în două secţiuni distincte: în prima, o parte dintre membrii vânătorilor, printre care şi eroul (JAGUAR), sunt capturaţi de către un alt „trib“ rival, şi purtaţi (timp de o jumătate de oră de proiecţie) spre templul acestora, unde urmează a fi sacrificaţi… În cea de-a doua parte, eroul reuşind să scape în ultima clipă!, asistăm – în sens invers! – la urmărirea evadatului de către ferocii templieri…! (ambele secţiuni fiind împănate cu diverse scene ce-ţi ridică părul pe cap…!). În final: ajungând, întâmplător, la marginea oceanului, epuizat şi rănit, eroul zăreşte… primele corăbii ale conquistadorilor spanioli… acostând pe Noul Continent! (şi se retrage în junglă, de unde plecase).

Ei bine – aici e buba; şi acum revenim la „motto“-ul filmului: Ori (aşa cum am învăţat la cursuri), civilizaţia maya a dispărut după (şi în urma) invaziei spaniole…!?

Ori (aşa cum susţine Gibson, prin insertul lui Durant), această civilizaţie era distrusă, din interior, de către propriii ei oameni, şi înainte de invazia europenilor…?! Iar dacă da – CUM şi-au distrus-o?! Prin vânătoare tribală, săgeţi înfipte în gât şi suliţe în pântec…?! În acest caz, de unde „Miracolul columbian“ cu ale sale tone de aur şi obiecte de artă fantastice, cărate în Europa?!

…Dar, să nu intrăm în amănunte.
