In România anilor ’90 a fi inginer era un blestem. Inginerii erau mulţi, iar fabrici din ce in ce mai puţine. Unii şi-au schimbat meseriile, alţii şi-au cumpărat bilet de avion.

Cosmin Borcea a plecat in 2000. Lucra ca director de imagine în TVR. Soţia lui, Ligia, era însărcinată în ultima lună când a ajuns pe aeroportul din Toronto. O primă deziluzie: la maternitate i s-a spus că asigurarea pe care o are din ţară nu acoperă şi costurile naşterii. Sistemul funcţiona impecabil… dacă făceai parte din el. Românii nu au ajutat-o. A făcut-o însă… comunitatea poloneză. Timp de cinci ani, soţii Borcea nu au mai vrut să ştie de comunitatea românească. Dar viaţa în Canada nu era simplă: după primele şase luni au vrut să se întoarcă în ţară. Dar acasă nu mai era loc pentru ei: erau nişte „plecaţi”. Cordonul ombilical fusese tăiat: treptat deveneau nişte „moroi” – oamenii care bântuie între cele două lumi: în Canada le este dor de acasă, acasă le este dor de noua lor patrie.

Pe strada pe care locuiesc soţii Borcea vecinii sunt chinezi, croaţi, indieni, italieni şi… canadieni la a doua generaţie.

Steagul canadian, al frunzei de arţar, este afişat cu mândrie la intrarea celor mai multe dintre case. Sunt canadieni italieni, canadieni români sau canadieni indieni, în Toronto locuiesc circa 35.000 de români. Cei mai mulţi au venit aici după 1989. Este metropola având ritmul de dezvoltare cel mai accentuat, apropierea de zona industrială americană din jurul Marilor Lacuri fiind unul dintre motive. Zona anglofonă – oraşul respiră aerul american al oraşelor noi, cu străzi nesfârşite (cea mai lungă stradă din lume – Yonge Street, 1.896 km!! – se află aici), parcuri imense şi pietoni rari.

Cei mai mulţi sunt ingineri: infor- maticieni, electronişti, mecanici. Sistemul funcţionează deja: s-a creat un know-how al imigraţiei: ghiduri (orale sau postate pe Internet) care îţi spun ce să faci în primele luni canadiene. Cei mai mulţi români locuiesc în blocurile cunoscute deja ca „româneşti” (în Montreal acestea aparţin chiar unor proprietari români), într-o cameră, două sau trei vor locui, cei mai norocoşi, câteva luni, cei mai puţin norocoşi câţiva ani. Vor trimite mailuri cu CV-uri la zeci de firme.

Aici l-am cunoscut pe Dorin, un tip mai puţin norocos: era între două slujbe (varianta optimistă a şomajului) şi încerca să scape de… nevasta româncă. A cunoscut-o în avion şi a luat-o rapid de soţie. S-a dovedit că aceasta, după ce i-a jurat dragoste, nu era interesată decât de cetăţenia canadiană. Şi cum legea canadiană este foarte exigentă, Dorin e acum îndatorat peste măsură, plătindu-i soţiei drepturile. Poliţia nu are cum să îl ajute: ca el sunt mii de canadieni.

Cosmin şi Ligia au locuit şi ei aici. împreună cu Călin, băiatul lor. După un an şi mai multe slujbe schimbate, în ture de zi şi de noapte, cu calificare sau nu, s-au mutat. Astăzi au rate la o casă, la maşină, asigurări de sănătate, fac parte din sistem. Ligia, odată vedetă de televiziune, este acum asistent medical veterinar.

Canada este o altfel de Americă: oameni mai retraşi şi mai timizi, o climă severă şi un spirit al competiţiei mai puţin exacerbat. 0 ţară multi- culturală, unde amestecul de rase, etnii, religii şi culturi nu duce la omogenizare. Canada a creat conceptul de multi- culturalism prin asumarea sa de către premierul de atunci, Pierre Trudeau, în 1971, afirmându-se pluralismul etnic drept sursă de dezvoltare. Ceea ce şi este acum, după 35 de ani.

Imi vorbesc despre răceala sistemului canadian, superficialitatea şi lipsa bucuriei şi de a trăi a canadienilor. Le place liniştea şi uşurinţa cu care sistemul funcţionează aici. Totul se face uşor. Atunci când vorbesc de România un surâs le luminează faţa: amintirile îi îndeamnă să îmi spună că odată şi odată vor reveni cu siguranţă acasă, definitiv. îi întreb ce se va întâmpla atunci cu Călin, care se simte canadian şi care are despre România amintirile unei vacanţe de vară în Munţii Neamţului. Nu au un răspuns, au doar speranţe. Sunt între cele două lumi.

La Montreal – metropola care îşi afişează ostentativ francofonia – au venit românii care au ales, pe lângă franceză, un stil de viaţă mai european. Oraşul îşi păstrează aerul colonial francez şi aminteşte de lumea veche. Aici clădirile nu sufocă, iar montrealezii se pot bucura mai uşor de oraşul lor, la pas.

Primii români au ajuns aici în anii ’50. Monica Matte Mateescu îmi povesteşte cum a dat de veste părinţilor ei în România că a murit, pentru ca Securitatea să nu îi hărţuiască rudele. A plecat din ţară, via Franţa, încă din 1942. Soţul său este doctor în drept aerospaţial, domeniu pe care în mare măsură 1-a creat. în anii ’60 şi-a cumpărat părinţii de la Ceauşescu, cu 10.000 de dolari bucata, şi i-a scos din ţară.
