Pentru marele dispărut

Necesităţile tiparului ne silesc să scriem în grabă aceste câteva rânduri subt impresia covârşitoare a morţii neaşteptate a ilustrului scriitor.

Sunt numai câteva săptămâni de când publicam, în cinstea sexagenarului Caragiale, numărul festiv al revistei noastre fără să putem bănui că numărul de doliu va trebui să urmeze aşa de curând!

Era încă, neîntrecutul artist, în toată bogăţia strălucită a geniului său artistic, a acelui geniu care a deschis în literatura noastră drumuri noi şi nepieritoare şi dela a cărui putere creatoare aşteptam una din acele opere care încoronează o viaţă întreagă de producţiune artistică. Curmându-i firul vieţii, moartea năprasnică a curmat toate posibilităţile ce erau într’însul şi toate speranţele ce trăiau în noi.

Mai târziu, se va spune, în liniştea sufletească trebuincioasă, ce a însemnat Caragiale pentru arta şi pentru cultura românească. In durerea de care sântem cuprinşi, acum nu putem decât să aducem prinosul nostru de recunoştinţă pentru ilustrul dispărut.

Va putea fi opera lui privită din multe puncte de vedere şi judecata asupra ei va putea să fie deosebită. Un lucru însă e sigur: ceva mare a dispărut din mijlocul nostru! Cu Ion Caragiale nu dispare numai cel mai de seamă dramaturg al nostru şi, incontestabil, cel mai strălucit prozator pe care l-am avut până astăzi, ci dispare o personalitate atât de originală, atât de complexă şi atât de caracteristică încât e peste putinţă s’o măsurăm în cumpăna valorilor obişnuite.

Când timpul îşi va fi îndeplinit opera lui, când oamenii şi lucrurile vremei noastre vor apărea în lumina lor adevărată, numai atunci se va putea spune cine a fost Caragiale într’o epocă de tranziţie, în care ceea-ce a fost a pierit, iar ceea-ce va fi nu trăeşte încă.

Mai mult decât oricare altul, Caragiale a fost omul timpului său. Nu însă ca un produs fatal al mediului în care a trăit şi ale cărui erori le-a împărtăşit, ci ca o conştiinţă superioară, absorbită în observaţia adâncă, precisă, viguroasă a lumei în mijlocul căreia i-a fost dat să existe şi să lumineze.

Un incomparabil observator, – iată ceea-ce a fost mai întâi Caragiale. Au încercat unii şi alţii să-i atribuie idei preconcepute. A fost un conservator care a demascat demagogia liberală, au spus unii. A fost un adevărat liberal care a biciuit falsul democratism,- ar putea spune alţii. Profundă eroare. Caragiale n’a fost nimic din toate astea. A fost un mare artist, tot aşa de mare prin puterea de observaţiune ca si prin aceea de expresiune. A-l privi altfel înseamnă a-l micşora şi astăzi, când nu mai este, înseamnă a-i necinsti şi memoria.

Pe marele artist îl plânge toată Românimea, pe puternicul evocator de viaţă, pe făuritorul celei mai desăvârşite proze ce s’a scris până astăzi în limba noastră.

Impreună cu toată suflarea românească îşi depune şi „Flacăra” prinosul său de recunoştinţă la sicriul aceluia care, cu atâta strălucire, a cinstit gândirea şi graiul neamului nostru.
