Deunăzi, m-a oprit pe stradă o bătrânică.
Era măruntă de statură, îmbrăcată cuviincios, cu o bocceluţă în mână. După port, părea de la ţară. Îmi era simplu să-mi închipui că tocmai s-a dat jos dintr-un tren şi acum se rătăcise în furnicarul şi vacarmul din preajma Gării de Nord.
Când am văzut-o venind spre mine, m-am oprit – bănuiam că vroia să mă întrebe cum să găsească o anumită adresă. Aşa a şi fost.
„– Cum ajung la guvern? La domnul Boc?“, m-a întrebat ea grăbită.
Întrebarea m-a descumpănit. Până când să mă adun şi să-i răspund, altcineva i-a arătat încotro s-o apuce, zâmbind batjocoritor.
Am reuşit doar s-o întreb: „De ce vrei să mergi acolo?“ Mi-a aruncat peste umăr, în timp ce se îndepărta: „Ce să fie? Necazuri. De-aia am eu o vorbă cu guvernul.“
Am privit-o cum se pierde în forfota amiezii. Mi-am zis: „Doamne, femeia asta a cheltuit o groază de bani ca să ajungă la Bucureşti! A parcurs un drum lung, e probabil ruptă de oboseală. Mai mult ca sigur, e deja ameţită de circulaţia nebună, de mirosul de benzină, de claxoane şi ţipete, de aurolacii cu pungi la nas, de cerşetorii care te trag de haine ca să-i miluieşti. Dar ea are o ţintă – trebuie musai să ajungă la guvern. Să ceară ceva, sau să reclame ceva. Are credinţa că va fi primită în audienţă de un înalt funcţionar al statului. Doar de aceea e pus acolo – să se ocupe de cei necăjiţi. Are credinţa că acesta o va asculta cu multă răbdare şi, cu un simplu telefon, îi va rezolva situaţia, care o fi ea. Câtă credulitate! Ce speranţe îşi leagă de venirea ei în Capitală! Nici măcar într-o democraţie adevărată, nu originală, cum e la noi, n-ar avea nici o şansă de a-şi spune păsul cuiva de rangul unui prim-ministru.“
Fără să vreau, mi-am aruncat privirea în jur. Puzderie de bannere şi afişe prezentând chipurile candidaţilor la preşedinţie. Fiecare dintre ei promiţând marea cu sarea. Fiecare făgăduind respect pentru cetăţeni şi un viitor mai bun.
Am mai rămas locului o clipă. Şi, spre surprinderea celor cu care eram, am început să râd amar.
