Recomandare: „Desert Flower”, cartea scrisă de Waries Dirie [i care stă la baza acestei ecranizări. Din păcate, o puteţi găsi doar în limba engleză.
Câteodată se întâmplă ca ideile dintr-un film să fie mai importante decât calităţile sale artistice. Deşi pelicula poate fi neşlefuită, poţi ajunge, prin intermediul ideii care o susţine, să empatizezi cu acea situaţie sau personaj.
Este şi cazul lui Desert Flower. Poate nu străluceşte în privinţa jocului actoricesc sau al imaginii, dar ajungi să ţii la Waries Dirie, a cărei poveste o aflăm din film. Waries este o fată de culoare provenită dintr-o familie de nomazi din Somalia, care ajunge top model la New York. Ea are şansa să fie prima femeie care vorbeşte în faţa Naţiunilor Unite despre circumcizia feminină, un obicei ancestral în lumea din care vine şi care are drept consecinţă dispariţia plăcerii din timpul actului sexual. Doar aşa pot fi considerate femeile pure. Ştiam despre acest tip de mutilare, dar până să văd filmul nu am putut înţelege cu adevărat. Poate nici acum nu înţeleg problema pe de-a întregul, dar am ajuns să empatizez văzând situaţiile prin care Waries a trecut. Tot filmul reprezintă o pendulare de imagini între Somalia şi Occident. Nu toate amintirile ei legate de deşertul natal sunt negative, deşi în mare parte sunt problematice. Actriţa din rolul principal are o inocenţă şi o frumuseţe care ajută extrem de mult la conturarea personajului.
